Like fillings, inlays and onlays are used to fill a cavity but both play different roles in reinforcing a tooth weakened as a result of damage or decay. It falls under the umbrella of restorative dentistry, repairing the large chewing surface of a back tooth. A composite onlay is used when an inlay is not substantial enough and will repair the centre of a tooth’s chewing surface.
What happens during treatment for inlays and onlays?
We will take impressions of the tooth that needs treatment and send it off for the inlay to be custom-created. It will be made from either porcelain or resin, both of which are tooth-coloured. Your dentist will remove the decayed matter and, when the restoration has arrived back at the practice, will invite you back to have the composite fitted.
Why have an onlay or inlay to restore your tooth?
- It offers support when a filling isn’t strong enough.
- They protect teeth from further damage.
- Simple and minimally invasive procedure.
- Composite onlays and inlays are aesthetically pleasing, created to match your tooth shade, so you can feel confident about your smile.
