Inlays and onlays
Like fillings, inlays and onlays are used to fill a cavity but both play different roles in reinforcing a tooth weakened as a result of damage or decay. It falls under the umbrella of restorative dentistry, repairing the large chewing surface of a back tooth. A composite onlay is used when an inlay is not substantial enough and will repair the centre of a tooth’s chewing surface.
What happens during treatment for inlays and onlays?
We will take impressions of the tooth that needs treatment and send it off for the inlay to be custom-created. It will be made from either porcelain or resin, both of which are tooth-coloured. Your dentist will remove the decayed matter and, when the restoration has arrived back at the practice, will invite you back to have the composite fitted.
